FULL-GRAIN VS. TOP-GRAIN: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Full-Grain Leather (San Francisco Leather products: Camino, Luna, Quito, Belt)
The highest quality grade of leather. Retains the entire grain layer with all natural markings, texture, and character. Gets more beautiful with use, developing a rich patina over 20+ years. This is investment-quality leather.
Top-Grain Leather (Kalito Leather & All-In Leather, S&G Leather products)
Premium quality leather with a refined surface for uniformity. More consistent appearance than full-grain, still durable and ages well. Excellent quality for structured designs and elegant pieces.
What We Don't Use
- Genuine leather (low-quality scraps)
- Bonded leather (leather dust glued together)
- PU/faux leather (plastic)
WHY VEGETABLE TANNING MATTERS:
San Francisco Leather uses traditional vegetable tanning—a slower, eco-friendly process using natural tannins from tree bark instead of harsh chemicals.

YOUR LEATHER WILL DEVELOP A PATINA
This is not damage—this is transformation. Premium leather (especially full-grain vegetable-tanned) is meant to age. The patina that develops makes your piece uniquely yours.
REGULAR MAINTENANCE:
- Wipe occasionally with a soft, dry cloth
- Brush off dust or dirt gently
- Let leather breathe—don't store in plastic bags
WHAT TO AVOID:
- Prolonged water exposure (light rain is fine)
- Direct heat sources (radiators, hot car dashboards)
- Harsh chemical cleaners
CONDITIONING:
After 6-12 months of regular use, you may condition the leather:
- Use Southern Route Trading Company Leather Balm
- Apply sparingly with a soft cloth
- Let absorb overnight before using
WATER EXPOSURE:
If your piece gets wet:
- Blot (don't rub) with a soft cloth
- Let air dry naturally at room temperature
- Never use hair dryers or direct heat
- Apply leather conditioner once fully dry
PATINA DEVELOPMENT:
Your leather will darken and develop warm tones over time. Sun exposure creates natural highlights. Scratches blend in and add character. This is exactly how premium leather should behave.
